“The best thing you can do for yourself is to buy this book! And the second best thing you can do is to tell your doctor and physical therapist about it. It deserves to be part of every medical school’s curriculum and should be a must read for everyone out there with pain: back, neck, shoulder, foot pain etc.

Mr. Davies has written a clear, understandable book that can help the average person troubleshoot and then treat myofascial pain. This book will give you a roadmap to common trigger points, or small contraction knots in the muscles of the body which pain specialists feel are involved in a majority of pain problems. It then guides you in treating those trigger points.
My own journey began with neck pain that was unsuccessfully treated with pain killers, corticosteroids, lulled with muscle relaxers and only partially remedied with conventional physical therapy. I accidentally discovered this book and have found the relief that I have been seeking. I also eased shoulder pain that was so troublesome. In fact I have discovered why my plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) wasn't responding to the conventional treatments, orthotics and stretching.
If you are plagued with pain that no one seems able help you with, then consult this excellent workbook and help yourself. I just don’t understand why when this type of therapy can help so many, it isn’t one of the first things your doctor prescribes to you. You are the best judge of your pain and with the information contained in this book you just might become the best manager of it.”

“Saved from Disability!
I want to share my enthusiasm for this book. Following the self-treatment methods in Clair Davies’s book has saved me from a future of pain and disability and has also helped several of my friends. About a year and a half ago a terrible fall strained and tore the muscles and ligaments in my groin and hips and also the medial meniscus in my left knee. After an orthopedic surgeon restored the knee, he prescribed physical therapy. However, this made my muscles more painful.
Last winter, after little improvement, I consulted a “Pain Management Specialist” MD who injected cortisone into my back and prescribed hydrotherapy. Again the exercises made my legs and hips more painful. So he told me to get a hip replacement or I would end up in a wheelchair. Unfortunately there are no medical specialists dealing with muscles and ligaments.
Looking for help at Barnes & Noble, I ran across Clair Davies’s book. It was easy to locate my trigger points because of their electric-shock tingle. After I massaged them, I felt much less pain and was immediately able to sleep on my left side for the first time since the accident. And improvement has continued. Now I’m painting my condo—without a wheelchair. Both doctors did their best, as did the physical therapists who tried to help me—but all in vain. The work of Doctors Travell and Simons on trigger points seems to have been largely ignored by the medical profession, possibly because the recommended treatment is cumbersome.
Clair Davies’s book, with its practical suggestions, is a godsend. Obviously physicians and physical therapists could better help their patients if they studied it. I have excitedly told others about the book, and a ripple effect has ensued. For instance, a neighbor, faced with selling her cherished second-floor condo because she could not take the stairs, has now canceled the sale and is recommending the book to her friends who are in turn recommending it to others. And a cousin, whose life had been circumscribed by dizziness that her doctors could not explain, recovered during one evening’s massage, startling her visiting daughters and causing them to buy their own copies of the book. I think others will benefit, too. I highly recommend it.”

“I stumbled onto this book in desperation about a year ago. I was 6 months postop from a cervical spine fusion (C 5-6-7) but I continued to have pain in the scapula region and my neck was still so tight I thought I would lose my mind if I couldn’t find a way to decrease my pain and improve my mobility. It actually went all the way down my left side and hip. I'd been thru all the proper medical channels and had some benefit from physical therapy but I could NOT get those people (medical) to understand how deep the pain was and how determined I was to get better. I guess they thought since I was functioning (working and going to grad school) at a pretty high level I must be OK. ARGH. We need to teach them to LISTEN better.
This book ALONE helped tremendously and I immediately bought a Theracane. I started getting professional massages a couple months later and was fortunate to find a person who is well-versed in trigger point. Between the two of us I am 110% better but still not “perfect” (and probably won't ever be!). I start every morning with a lot of trigger point massage while I’m still laying in bed planning out my day! I’m sure people think I’m nuts when they see me driving down the road with a tennis ball in my hand!
Just yesterday during my massage, the therapist told me to go home and look up QUADRATUS LUMBORUM in my Trigger Point book. Lo and behold... I thought I was reading about myself! It’s amazing how working on these trigger points also releases the tension UP my spine and in the scapula area. I use the trigger point massage in combination with chiropractic adjustments and professional massage (every 2-3 wks) and I do still take Vioxx. Each individual has to find what works best for him/her.
BUY THIS BOOK TODAY - YOU WON'T BE SORRY! This book CAN be read by the average “Joe or Susie” and help will follow! I've bought at least 6 copies for friends/relatives and recommend it heartily.”

“This really works! I confess when I ordered this book I thought all the glowing reports might be a bit exaggerated, and expected nothing more than an above-average manual on massage. I soon found out I was wrong. This book is unlike any I have ever seen. More importantly, the techniques that author Clair Davies outlines REALLY WORK.
The book lays out a complete system for treating muscular pain in the body, with excellent diagrams and clear and detailed explanations. The book addresses a wide variety of common and uncommon aches and pains throughout the anatomy, some of which you might never attribute to a problem with a muscle.
The illustrations clearly show where these patterns of “referred pain” are located, along with the corresponding muscle trigger points. The great thing is that by simply touching the trigger point in question, you can instantly verify that it is in fact the source of the pain.
Davies’ writing is direct, honest, and good-humored. The explanations are easy to follow and accessible to the lay-person. Personally, I would have been interested in more detailed medical information in the text, and Davies alludes to some of this in passing. However, he has condensed just the essentials for easy self-treatment in this volume, and the book is probably more effective and usable for that reason.
The massage techniques that Davies describes are simple and can be self-administered, usually with the hands or a tennis ball. I have used the techniques to relieve pain in my shoulders, arms, and hands from sitting for long periods at the computer, as well as sciatic pain and knee pain caused by a bike accident. In each case, I got quick and lasting relief after only a few minutes of massage a day.
Every home should have a copy of this book. It’s well worth the investment—it will pay for itself in what you’ll save on doctor and chiropractor bills and pain killers.”

“Excellent book! Believe the reviews here. I must say I had my doubts about purchasing this book, but had gotten a recommendation from a friend of mine. I've noticed that the worst of pains ease or disappear as a result of massaging noted key trigger points.
The way I recommend reading this book is to read Chapters 1-3, then use the index and “Trigger Point Guides” and pictures as to your road map of what to do next. I agree with a previous review that there is some initial jumping around and some slight organizational confusion, but after practicing with 5 trigger points, you'll wonder how you got along without this book.”

“Excellent Book (not Quackery)! I was really worried that this book might have been a standard new-age, make-a-buck, quack title. Thank goodness that turned out to be a groundless worry. This is an excellent book (with medical references) that does a very good job of helping you get rid of pain.
I had hurt my lower back by performing the arduous task of putting on my underwear. The doctors and physical therapist couldn’t really come up with a reason for it. After a month, it still wasn’t getting any better. Searching the web gave me references to this book. Within three days of reading it and poking around in my UPPER (not LOWER) back, my thighs, and my abdomen, the pain has faded to just a reminder. I’m still not able to bend and reach like I used to. But, I’m exercising and stretching again, so hopefully that'll change. Best of all, it no longer hurts just to SIT (or lie down or stand, for that matter). After showing my wife that her lower body has just about every active trigger point known, she’s also reading the book and working on her points. Hopefully, her pain will reduce in a couple of days, too.
The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that it's kind of hard to find and reference ALL the trigger points associated with a specific pain FOR THE FIRST TIME. The book does have a diagram for pain locations at the start of each chapter. But, in many cases, the pain will be caused by multiple trigger points in multiple body locations. It takes quite a bit of paging through the book to figure out what you’re supposed to do. Once you figure it out, though, the book is great. Of course, in the author’s defense, I can't come up with a better organization method outside of having some kind of software with an anatomical display using hyperlinks.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgment that he/she knows what's causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and it’s cheap.”

“Great Book for Anyone with Myofascial Pain Syndrome!
This book can help people with MPS, sprained ankle, tennis elbow, & chronic back, knee, & neck pain because they are all the same thing! That back pain or sore wrist that reoccurs often can get worse & even spread. I had pain in my back after a couple of years it moved up to my neck. Then I got hurt at work & have been unable to work for a year. I got hurt because my body mechanics were messed up by trigger points which shorten muscles & put stress on the wrong areas of your body. Then I spent a year in incredible pain misdiagnosed as having sciatica.
After getting a proper diagnosis I have used this book to relieve much of my pain. It does have some short comings, but it has a lot of good info & is easy to use, plus it’s cheap compared to chiropractor & doctor visits. It shows the source of pain & has detailed info about symptoms & causes. I have been amazed at how many of life’s aches & pains are caused by muscles & can be self treated.”

“Great Book (first thing I’d save in a fire)!!
Suffered a sprained/strained right knee in March. VERY painful, but just minor swelling. After trying a couple of extended acupuncture sessions without any pain relief, plus trying a homeopathic remedy without success, I turned myself in to an orthopedist who did basic x-rays & put me on a 3x day regimen of ibuprofen, which, after three weeks, cleared up about 80% of my problem.
At this point, I accidentally came upon Mr. Davies’s book, ordered it, & have been using it for pain & stiffness relief “wherever” ever since. It quickly cleared up the residue of my knee pain (& my prior constant “buckling” knee, which well may have been the original instigator of my knee pain).
I particularly like the book as it’s just so easy to use (anything medical usually makes my eyes glaze over). Concurrently, and for comparison, I did also purchase Bonnie Prudden’s book, also on the subject of trigger point massage therapy, but DEFINITELY prefer Mr. Davies' version. Ms. Prudden’s book does go heavily into remedial exercise though, which Mr. Davies, for whatever reasons, doesn’t cover. Perhaps another book is in the offing???”

“Trigger book worked better than accu/chiro/PT/prescrip/etc.!
I have four “bulged” low back disks. Other than surgery, I’ve tried everything, and the approach I found in this book worked best. Hard to believe, but the simple massage of trigger points is for me a bigger help than acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic, PT, yoga, Pilates, Flexeril, NSAIDs, Prednisone, etc. My wife has plantar fasciitis (a runners’ foot injury), and it’s helped her, too.
You don’t even have to read the book, just look for a picture that locates your pain, and rub that set of trigger points (although the book is worth a read).”

“This will change everything! Well, maybe not EVERYTHING, but I must say that it helped me get rid of an assortment of aches and pains within a matter of days. “I was in so much pain that I couldn’t sleep at night. I was diagnosed with arthritis (hip, back, etc), but I was not satisfied that this explained my pain. Then I found Davies’ book and started to work on trigger points with the rubber ball he recommends. It didn’t solve all my problems, but it reduced my pain to the point where I could sleep without pills (and demonstrated that my pain was at least partly muscular)--and all for the cost of a ... little ball! And now (several other therapies later), I still keep the book and the rubber ball by my bed, and still follow its directions to massage key areas on a daily basis.
This book is terrific--the best “self-help” book I’ve seen. It is clearly written, well organized, mostly well illustrated, and contains a wealth of really useful detail. It is definitely not one of those “glossy” books—all photos and no useful information. The author really does take the approach of someone who was himself helped by this therapy and who wants to make it as clear and accessible to his readers as possible. Very highly recommended.”

“This book is a godsend. Clair Davies’ book starts by describing the author’s personal journey as a person in pain who discovered the power of self-applied trigger point therapy. The book then goes on to detail the basics of trigger point science and methods of self-treatment. Each body region contains muscle-by-muscle descriptions of trigger point locations, causes, referred pain patterns, and specific self-treatment techniques with fingers, thumbs, tennis balls or other hand-held “tools".
Two populations will benefit. The first are professionals dealing with myofascial pain. Mr. Davies’ book has neatly summarized many of the essentials contained in the bar setting but often intimidating 2-volume “bibles” of trigger point therapy by Janet Travell and David Simons, which will make many more practitioners comfortable with the idea of searching for and treating trigger points with manual techniques.
More important than information for clinicians is the help and hope this book offers to suffering patients. The book’s focus is on self-treatment, which is not only *possible*, but is in fact *extremely* effective, and often downright necessary in this day and age: healthcare costs are forever rising, insurance coverage for physical therapy grows progressively more restrictive, massage therapists are often costly and the majority of the time, not covered by insurance, and, money factors aside, pain does not always present itself when professional treatment is readily available. Even with the *best* professional treatment, myofascial conditions are highly recurrent and knowing how to deal with these recurrences empowers patients and thereby reduces fear and apprehension.
With information referenced from current and highly reputable sources, The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook has not only my highest recommendation, but also the endorsement of many, many well-known names in the field of myofascial pain, including one of its pioneers, Dr. David Simons.”

“Warning! Keep this book to yourself!
I have now bought five copies of this book, giving them to friends, chronic sufferers of various completely misdiagnosed muscular plagues. The plain line drawings of an older guy doing it to himself and the author's tale of self-rescue from debilitating occupational trigger points are immediately winning. This is absolutely not another new age acupressure chakra crystallology AUM; it is the real thing. Pinch yourself; that's where it's at.
You have to get the Thera cane and the K-mart balls, too. I am only an amateur (hey baby!) masseur; but this book makes me feel a huge responsibility to, you know, CURE people. Next thing one knows one has a following like Jesus and has to employ a bodyguard and an accountant, and, well a personal masseur. OK I’m kidding; a bit anyway. Trigger points are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle. The spots are painful on compression and can produce referred pain, referred tenderness, motor dysfunction, and autonomic phenomena. Trigger points are classified as being active or latent, depending on their clinical characteristics.
An active trigger point causes pain at rest. It is tender to palpation with a referred pain pattern that is similar to the patient’s pain complaint. This referred pain is felt not at the site of the trigger-point origin, but remote from it. The pain is often described as spreading or radiating. Referred pain is an important characteristic of a trigger point. It differentiates a trigger point from a tender point, which is associated with pain at the site of palpation only.
Attention Doctors that keep telling people the pain is in their head. You should worry because when the word gets out and is accepted by “the system” a lot of $ will go into our pockets, and not into MRI’s and your referrals;) I wish you all well. “I have struggled with chronic myofascial pain syndrome for over five years. Unfortunately, the medical community often treated my condition like a sports injury. Prescribed stretches and strengthening exercises, although done faithfully, were not relieving my pain. Any direct use of the effected muscles just brought on more spasm and pain.
It was through reading this book that I first learned about trigger points in muscles with chronic pain, and the importance of dealing with them first. Only after breaking up existing trigger points will stretching and strengthening be effective. This book has helped me a great deal. It is very well presented and filled with practical methods I could do at home to help treat muscle pain. The many illustrations are an effective compliment to the text. The self-massage techniques presented are non-invasive, require no drugs, and utilize just hands or simple tools such as the humble tennis ball.
I can’t tell you how much pain relief I’ve gotten from learning how and where to use this inexpensive item on trigger points in my back and shoulder. The book is filled with this kind of practical help, all thoroughly and clearly explained. This book does not insult the scientific mind; rather it summarizes some important medical literature for us.
I was impressed that this book is based on the published work of two medical doctors, Travell and Simons. Dr. Travell was the personal physician of President John F. Kennedy. Travell was able to effectively treat the President’s chronic back pain using trigger point techniques. I thank Clair Davies for giving us an effective tool to treat long-standing muscle pain. I am impressed with the care that has gone into writing this book. I consider it a valuable reference and wouldn’t be without it. I use it daily and have noticed a consistent decrease in my level of pain.”

I wholeheartedly recommend this book, both to people suffering from pain *and* to clinicians dealing with myofascial conditions. I am a licensed physical therapist that has worked with myofascial pain for over 10 years.
Myofascial pain is a poorly understood problem even within the medical field, and, admittedly, clinically useful research on the topic has been slow in coming. Clinically, however, I have found manual trigger point therapy to be extremely safe and effective in assisting patients in their recovery from acute and chronic pain conditions.
One thing that seems true of myofascial pain, however, is its unfortunate and frustrating tendency to re-occur over time. These re-occurrences will often happen most inconveniently when the suffering person does not have access to skilled professional care. This is where the assistance provided by this book is so valuable; patients can learn how to safely and effectively treat their own trigger points with their own hands (and use of certain “tools”, some as simple as a tennis ball).
Mr. Davies’ book gives very clear descriptions of what trigger points are and how they contribute to pain. Muscle anatomy and function are described with clarity and excellent illustrations. Step by step instructions are given on which muscles to check for sensitivity depending on what body region is hurting.
This information (as well as other extremely useful information) is referenced out of the classic, medically authored “bibles” of trigger point treatment by Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons. Instruction is provided on how to search each muscle for the sensitive knots known as “trigger points” and guidelines provided for effective and safe massage treatment for those points. Probably most importantly, details are provided on how to reduce strain on involved muscles through analysis and alteration of postural and mechanical factors that can keep a pain problem active despite quality treatment.
The book is extremely well organized and easy to read with the author generously sharing his own personal history battling chronic pain, as well as many other case histories of people successfully helped by the methods in the book. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are at all unsure about purchasing it, I'd encourage trying to borrow or check it out from a library first; I am very confident that after you have read and applied the information in this title, you will be eager to own your own copy!”
